SUICIDE KILLS MORE NEW MEXICANS THAN COVID-19.
New Mexico suicides have clocked in around 25 deaths per 100,000 residents the last three years. And, suicides are typically underreported by 50%. So that bumps the number to 38 deaths by suicide per 100,000 residents.
COVID-19 deaths in the US of A are reported as 40 deaths per 100,000 people, as of this day in July.
Suicide: 38 per 100,000 residents.
COVID-19: 40 per 100,000 people.
You might say, “Ah! But it’s only July! The yearly deaths per 100,000 have five more months! It will be higher than 40!”
And thus far this year, suicide rates are over double of the previous individual three yearly rates. So, using these factors, here’s the New Mexico suicide deaths per 100,000 to date this year:
44 suicide deaths per 100,000 residents.
And, again, 40 COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 people nationwide.
Like C19 deaths, suicide deaths will be higher at year end.
And what about the New Mexico C19 deaths per 100,000 residents to date?
28 C19 deaths per 100,000 residents in New Mexico to date.
Suicide: 44 deaths per 100,000 residents.
C19: 28 deaths per 100,000 residents.
This is math so painfully simple you can do it on the back of a napkin.
Reality checks are so inconvenient.
I’d appreciate my fellow New Mexico suicide awareness advocates to share this article. We need to get the word out.
